The leader of the Niger Army, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has been sworn in as the Interim President of the country for a five-year term.
This decision has disrupted efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which had been urging the swift return to democratic governance following the 2023 military coup.
According to Mahamane Roufai, the Secretary-General of the Niger government, the transition period officially began on Wednesday and will end in 2030, during which Tchiani will have led Niger for nearly seven years.
“The transition period has been set for sixty months from the date of its announcement. However, this period may change depending on the country's security situation, reforms, and the schedule of the Sahel States Community,” Roufai stated.
General Tchiani has been in charge of the country since 2023, after deposing the elected President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.
